Through The Eyes Of A Teenage Reader

Hi, I'm Carlie! Welcome to my blog!

REVIEW: Seconds by Bryan Lee O'Mally

Since my last post I have read two books, and the other review will be up as soon as I write it.

This book is a graphic novel about a girl who started a restaurant and became head chef. Since then she bought a new place and is going to not be working in this old restaurant. Before she leaves her first restaurant she ends up making new a new friend, mending a relationship, and letting a relationship go. All because she found a girl with magic mushrooms in her room. That's all I'll say about the story because I don't want to give any crucial story points away.

The story itself was a very well thought out and consistent story. I enjoyed it and the plot of it. I liked the things that remained constant throughout her use of the mushrooms, and that many things changed. I felt that her character was changed a lot through the story and that she was a very realistic character.

The art in this graphic novel was also amazing. I loved the super cartoony aspect of it, and I also loved the colors chosen throughout the book as well. It was honestly a great story and I would recommend it to all of you. Even if you're not a huge graphic novel fan. Overall I gave it five out of five stars and thought it was great.

Sincerely,

Carlie

2015 Reading Challenge

I can be a pretty competitive person when it comes to certain things. I am very competitive when it comes to me and trying to read. So this year I decided to do a book challenge. 21 Proms Review

21 Proms - Sarah Mlynowski, Libba Bray, David Levithan, Holly Black, Ned Vizzini, Cecily von Ziegesar, Billy Merrell, Rachel Cohn, Will Leitch, Daniel Ehrenhaft, Aimee Friedman, Melissa de la Cruz, John Green, Jacqueline Woodson, Brent Hartinger, Leslie Margolis, Jodi Lynn Anderso

The first book that I read in 2015 was 21 Proms this was a book written by twenty-one authors. They all wrote a story about a prom, most were made up but I think one or two may have been the proms of the authors. I found some of these stories to be really fun, and some not so fun, and overall I gave the book 4 out of 5 stars because the ones I liked I really liked. I’m going to go over what I rated the stories one by one, and then I’ll describe the really good ones, and the ones I didn’t like that much in a little more detail.

“You Are A Prom Queen, Dance, Dance, Dance” by Elizabeth Craft (2/5)
“All She Wants” by Cecily von Ziegesar (2/5)
“In Vodka Veritas” by Holly Black (1/5)
“Your Big Night” by Sarah Mlynowski (3/5)
“Off Like a Prom Dress” by Billy Merrell (3/5)
“Mom called, she says you haave to go to prom” by Adrienne Maria Vrettos (4/5)
“Better Be Good to Me” by Daniel Ehrenhaft (5/5)
“Three Fates” by Aimee Friedman (5/5)
“The Question: A Play in One Act” by Brent Hartinger (3/5)
“Shutter” by Will Leitch (1/5)
“Geechee Girls Dancin’, 1955” by Jacqueline Woodson (1/5)
“How I Wrote to Toby” by E. Lockhart (4/5)
“Six-pack of Bud, a Fifth of Whiskey, and Me” by Melissa de la Cruz (3/5)
“Primate the Prom” by Libba Bray (1/5)
“Apology #1” by Ned Vizzini (5/5)
“See Me” by Lisa Ann Sandell (4/5)
“Prom for Fat Girls” by Rachel Cohn (3/5)
“Chicken” by Jodi Lynn Anderson (2/5)
“The Backup Date” by Leslie Margolis (4/5)
“Lost Sometimes” by David Levithan (4/5)
“The Great American Morp” by John Green (5/5)

Like I said I’m going to be explaining my least favorites and my favorites, I have four of each. We’ll start with my least favorites.
“In Vodka Veritas” was about a boy who decided with his friend to not go to prom and get drunk instead, and then his friend stood him up and went to prom. When the boy was walking around outside the prom the Latin Club came up to him and gave him a vile to drink so he wouldn’t be affected. The reason I didn’t like this one that much was because honestly I didn’t understand it. It didn’t make sense, and I didn’t get what was going on with the boys, or the Latin Club.
The next one I didn’t like, “Shutter”, was told in the point of view of a single father, whose daughter didn’t ever really like her mom enough to care about her leaving. This one I couldn’t tell what the relationship was between the father and daughter. I didn’t really understand if the author wanted up to think that the daughter was in love with the dad or not. It wasn’t all that clear.
“Geechee Girls Dancin’. 1955” was a story about a prom back in the slave days. I don’t want to say that I hated it because of that, but I just didn’t like the writing style so it made it hard for me to read and I ended up just skimming the story. The grammar was like something I would read in Junie B. Jones in 3rd grade.
The last one that I rated one of five stars was “Primate the Prom” by Libba Bray. The reason I didn’t like this one had everything to do with the story. The writing was fine, but I just felt really uncomfortable reading it. It’s about two boys who like each other because one looks like a gorilla. They go to prom and there are several other couples are like this too. I just didn’t like that it was sexualizing monkeys. It was a weird concept that I just didn’t like.
The first one I gave five stars to was “Better Be Good to Me”. This story was just so cute. But to start off I really enjoyed the writing style of this one, or at least the way it was approached. It was told in the perspective of a father writing a letter to his daughter about his prom, and that’s how him and his wife lost their virginity and started kind of dating. Is was just cute and it’s the dream of so many people to be high-school sweethearts with the person they go to prom with and this was what this story was.
The next five star story was “Three Fates” this one was about a girl who didn’t have a date to prom and her friends did, so desperate she asks a boy in her English class and he declines, she goes home and basically asks her brother who no one knows to go with her and he too declines. In one final attempt she asks an old friend who lives a little while away but he says he’s busy. The night of prom she’s under the impression that she’s just going “stag” when all three of the handsome guys show up to take her. It was just over all very cute and the writing style didn’t make me want to jab my eyes out either.
“Apology #1” was another five star story, there isn’t a huge reason why. I mean I like the guy and how he writes, but the story was (if I’m correct) true. And to me the guts it told him to write about that was impressive. I wouldn’t like to admit and talk so openly about something like that. He talked about how he stood a girl up at her prom that she invited him to. And it was just an interesting story on top of all the guts.
The final five star story was “The Great American Morp” this was the story by John Green. I like John Green but I wasn’t expecting to like this one the best. It’s about this girl and her parents become the photographers at her prom so her and her friend decide not to go to prom and throw a Morp at her house. The morp is all of the people that they life the best and they all dress up in ridiculous things and they have a band play and everyone just has a great time.

This book was edited by David Levithan and Daniel Ehrenhaft. There were also several four star stories, but I didn't want to have an even longer post. Thank you to anyone reading this!

Best Wishes,

Carlie

I'm back!

Hey guys,

So as you can tell I stopped blogging about the books I've read. The reason that I had to stop is that I just became way too busy. I had school, family came into town leaving me without a bed so I've been all over the place finding more comfortable places to sleep than my couch, and we've been on Christmas vacations and get togethers. I just haven't had time to write or read really withing the last few months.

I'm hoping that 2015 will be a better reading year for me. I plan on reading at least 50 books. In 2014 I only read 30, but I didn't take reading that seriously except for the last few months. I've also going to try to do a reading challenge to help me bring down my TBR pile. I don't want to drown in the books I need to get read so I will be working on that as well. I'm thinking about starting a YouTube channel this year also, this will help me stay motivated, and if not I don't have anything to loose by doing it.

I have read my first book and it fulfilled a challenge as well, I will be putting up a review of that tomorrow, and by the end of the week the challenge that I'm doing for this year will also be up. I want to keep this blog up as well in hopes that it too will keep me motivated. I'm going to be doing a book unhaul next week, and rearranging my book shelves. Later this month I hope to have the number of TBR books up, along with the titles of the books in it.

In Real Life: Graphic Novel Review

In Real Life - Cory Doctorow, Jen Wang

Hey guys!

So I took some time off reading the Lux series, because I don't want it to end. In doing so I read a graphic novel so I could get something read pretty quickly. The graphic novel was titled, In Real Life. I loved this graphic novel, it was so cute. I loved the animation and color scheme. It was perfect.

This story is about a girl who joins an online role playing game and she makes a friend and they do missions together to kill people to get paid real money. One day she sees one of these people she has to kill and decides not to kill them, and talks to him, and things ensue. It was really a great story. The plot was amazing, it went somewhere and I liked that. I wish there was a second, it ended in a place that there could possibly be another so I'm not sure. BUT, if there will be one I will be picking it up immediately.

I have two manga that I want to read this month along with another couple books, so hopefully I can get back on track with reading and my blog. Thank you for staying if you did!

Love,

Carlie

UPDATE

I haven't posted anything on here lately because of the fact that I have just been reading one series. This series is really good, but I've decided to just do one big review on the whole series instead to make it easier. So, that's why I haven't posted. I am almost done with the full series, including the prequel.

Sorry,
Carlie

Anya's Ghost by Vera Brosgol

Anya's Ghost - Vera Brosgol

Hey guys, so this is another graphic novel I picked up with month, I don’t know why I've been picking them up recently but they are really fun, easy to get into, and easy to finish.  Anyways, I enjoyed this one too. I liked the art and I liked that the color scheme stayed the same throughout the book. The book is about a Russian girl named Anya that falls down a well at the beginning of it. She finds a skeleton with a ghost attached to it. When she gets found she accidentally picked up a piece of the bone and the ghost follows her. They become friends and Emily, the ghost, helps her with things. But then something happens and that’s all that I’m really gonna say. At the beginning nothing was happening and I was actually a little bored with it. Then at the end the book picked up, it got creepy, and I wasn't expecting it. I loved that it changed like that. The only thing that I didn't really like is that I thought that Anya would have went through more character development that could have happened. The only thing that really changed in her is that she stopped smoking. When I believed that two or three things could have been changed just as easily. Other than that it was pretty good, another great book to pick up in the month of October.

Thanks for reading.

Love,

Carlie

Through The Woods by Emily Carroll

Through the Woods - Emily Carroll

This was a graphic novel, it was the first graphic novel I’ve ever read. I have read manga, but I consider those to be different things. I’m happy with my choice of first graphic novel. It was more on the creepy side, I had heard that from people who had read it. I choose to read it in the light, with people around, because I just got it and wanted to read and finish it that night. Though I loved it a ton, I wish I would have waited to read it at night, while waiting to fall asleep. I didn’t find it as creepy as people had made it sound. I don’t know if that’s because I read it in the light, or if I’m just used to scary things because they are some of my favorite movies. Either way, I wish I would have waited till dark to read it. It’s a compilation of five stories, an introduction, and a conclusion. The stories are all different, but the intro and conclusion had the same person in it. It was really beautiful, I loved the drawings. The pictures and artwork were to die for, I would sit and just stare at the pages as minutes passed by admiring them. I totally recommend picking it up, especially because Halloween is coming up and it’d be a nice October read.

The Series of Unfortunate Events: The Bad Beginnings by Lemony Snicket

The Bad Beginning - Lemony Snicket

This book is the first book I read on my September TBR.

This is the first book in a middle grade series, I'm sure most of you know that. I want to read this series because I feel like I'm the only person in the universe who has not yet read it. SO, I picked it up this month and read it in one sitting. I loved this book! When I went into this book I was expecting kind of childish language and instead was surprised by how the writing was. I liked that Lemony Snicket used the words and language the way he wanted to, and then in the middle of the sentence would just described it. It made the book seem a little creepier that was I thought. I don’t know why, but it just added something to it. I also really loved the description of the writing. Lemony Snicket is a fantastic writer who knows what he wants and makes it work so perfectly. I love him. One of my favorite things in this book was that as an 18 year old I was still getting that feeling that this middle grade book was relatable in a way. Not in the “oh my parents died too and I was stuck with a crazy family member” relatable, but some of the things he said in the book really applied to everyday life. No matter how old you are you can always pull a quote from this book and it relate to you still. I’m so excited to continue on with this series!

Thanks,

Carlie

September TBR

So this month I'm trying to get rid of some of the books that I own am embarrassed I haven't read yet. So lets get started.

The books are:

1. The Series of Unfortunate Events: The Bad Beginnings by Lemony Snicket

2. Memoirs of a Teenage Amnesiac by Gabrielle Zevin

3. Insurgent by Veronica Roth

4. Beautiful Darkness by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl

5. The Alchemyst (The Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel, #1)

I only picked 5 but I think I may read more, but it just depends on what school has me doing. By saying that it also may be less depending on what school has me doing.

Have a lovely day,

Carlie

The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern

The Night Circus - Erin Morgenstern

Okay guys, this is going to be a really quick review.

I listened to this book. I've listened to audio books, so I don't think that it had anything to do with me not liking it. So I didn't like it, basically it was very slow and the plot wasn't as strong as it could be. What I DID like about the book was the writing style, and the descriptions. The best part about this book was the fact that it was set at night. It made for interesting visuals in your head. Like you saw the dark sky and the creepy feeling rooms and that was my favorite park about it.

I know that I said I didn't like the book, but that doesn't mean you won't, so don't let my opinion sway yours.

Have a great day,

Carlie

SPOILER ALERT!

Eleanor and Park

Eleanor and Park - Rainbow Rowell

REVIEW: Eleanor & Park

*****SPOILERS*****

HOLY FREAKING COW.

This is my second Rainbow Rowell book, the first being Fangirl. I honestly loved them both, but in their own ways. They were both COMPLETELY different. I really liked that about these books. I was excepting them to be somewhat the same. I was only expecting that though, because I don’t read multiple books by the same authors unless they’re a series. Though John Green is that exception. Don’t get me wrong I love John Green books, but if you put Looking for Alaska and Paper Towns next to each other they are kind of the same. Boy in high school, chasing after a girl, does stupid dangerous things for said girl, doesn’t get the girl in the end. And so when I read this, I was expecting some similarities, but none were found.  I really enjoyed this book. One of my favorite things was the split narration. I thought that was so cool, different, and unique. There were only a few things I didn’t like. 1. I didn’t like that they fell in love so fast, maybe that’s just me but I feel like it was such a quick change from I hate this person to I love this person. 2. When they were driving to Minnesota they both decided this was going to be awful, and that they were going to miss each other immensely but still went through with it anyways. Knowing that they weren’t going to find someone they loved as much ever again. 3. She was such a jerk after she left, completely not talking to him, not opening his letters. She had the resources to call and write but didn’t. That irritated me so much. 4. Him. Park. God. He missed her, and said it so much in many different ways. He thought of her all the time. Didn’t do anything ever so he could be home in case she called, thought of her when he saw someone with red hair, went by her house almost daily. I get that he didn’t go to prom with her cause she wasn’t there, and no one wants to go to prom alone, but he said that it was a relief to kiss this girl. I didn’t get that. That made no sense to me, it kind of was an asshole thing to say. AND THEN TWO PARAGRAPHS LATER WHEN HE GOT THE POSTCARD HE WAS TOATLLY IN LOVE AGAIN. And to me that was a pain because he just finished saying it was a relief to kiss someone else. 4. What three long words?! CAUSE IF IT WAS ‘I LOVE YOU’ THAT ACTUALLY THREE PRETTY FREAKING SHORT WORDS. AND THHAT CAN’T BE HOW IT ENDS. NO. But it is. It is how it ends and it sucks. But overall it was a really cute book, and those are things that just bothered me. Others might not have minded those things. I recommend this book! Thanks for reading.

Favorite short book. (Under 200 pages)

Okay, so this one would have to be The Giver by  Lois Lowry. I just now jumped on the bandwagon to read The Giver. It had taken me a while, I owned the book and was going to read it eventually but I hadn’t gotten to it. My little sister kind of pressured me to read it because she doesn’t read ever, but had to read it for school and absolutely loved it. She had legitimately gotten mad at me when I said I haven’t read it and she forced me to read it. Honestly, I loved it. I read it in a few days. It was just a really good, interesting concept. And I totally recommend it.

Facebook

A book that everyone pressured you into reading.

This book for me would be Beautiful Creatures by Kami Garcia. I had everyone and their mother tell me to read this book.  Literally, the person I babysit for told me to read the book. I’m not going to lie, I watched the movie before I read the book. I hate myself for it, but everyone told me that the book was better and that the movie was a poor representation of the book. So, I completely forgot everything I knew about the movie except the basic characters, and picked up the book. I really enjoyed it. I went out and bought the rest of them, and now I’m hearing from all of BookTube that the second one sucked, and they stopped reading after that. So great. BUT, the first one at least was really good and worth the read.

Tumblr

A book you read before it was cool.

WITHER. FEVER. SEVER. The Chemical Garden Trilogy by Lauren DeStefano. I read this when they came out. Now everyone is reading them. I really loved this trilogy and thought it was a great concept, but a very good plot line. I wouldn’t shut up about these books. I made my cousin read them, my sister, tried to get my mom, talked like 5 people from school to read them, and had the person I babysat for read them. I read them and would talk to my boyfriend about them, and tell him everything about them. We’d sit on the phone with me explaining everything in great detail for hours. He never needs to read them because I told him literally everything about it (Not that he ever would read them). But honestly I loved them, I know some people didn’t, but they are some of my favorite books. Again worth the read.

Myspace

A book you loved when you were younger but probably wouldn’t love now.

Okay, this one was really hard actually, because I was looking through my Goodreads, and on my bookshelf and couldn’t find anything. But I’m going to go with The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton. I read this during my 8th grade year of school. And I seriously loved everything about it. I was so obsessed. We read the book, and took a test I made a 100 on it. Then we watched the movie and I fell even more in love with it, and I bought the movie. And it was fantastic. Now I know what you’re thinking, then why’d you choose this book? I choose this book because I feel like if I were to read this book again at this time of my live, I would still really enjoy it, but I wouldn’t love it like I had when I first read it. It would be a different kind of love, but it wouldn’t be the same. Though I do think that it’s a fantastic book, and I definitely recommend it.

Instagram

A book with the most beautiful cover in existence.

This one is really hard, because there are so many. But I’m going to have to go with It’s Kind of A Funny Story by Ned Vizzini, because it’s sort of simple and different and you don’t really get it at all. Then when you read the book you totally get it and it makes sense. This book was also a really good book and I loved it, and if you haven’t read it. Do. It’s great.

Youtube

A book you want to see turned into a movie.

This one is a complicated decision because there are books that I really want to be turned into a movie, but I don’t really want to risk them screwing it up and such. So this one was really hard to pick, but I think I will have to go with Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell. I picked this one because I don’t think they’d be able to mess it up because its all right there in the book. Everything they would need is in the book. Everything is described perfectly, and the characters are in so much detail it’d be easy. And Rainbow could be there, and I think it could turn out pretty good.

A book you recommend to everyone.

The book that I’m going to choose for this one is The Maze Runner by James Dashner. I choose this book because it is a good book that is an easy read and good for people who have been reading for a while, and people who want to get into it. It’s a fun book with lots of different things that happen to the characters. And I really enjoyed it, and I think lots of different people with different personalitlies would to.

Thank you guys for reading, I know it’s sort of long but I hope it was fun for you.

Love,

Carlie

SPOILER ALERT!

Fangirl: Rainbow Rowell

Fangirl - Rainbow Rowell

Okay,

Oh my gosh. This book was so good. I loved it.

When I first saw this book I didn't know anything about it. All I knew was Rainbow Rowell had written it, and she was supposed to be an absolutely fantastic writer. (This is the first Rainbow Rowell book I have read.) So, I didn't know what to expect from it or anything. I kind of like going into books like that so I can completely form my own opinion and such.

The only thing I didn't like about this book were the experts after the chapters ended. I didn't think most of them had any relevance. Honestly, I stopped reading them after a while and only skimmed them. I LOVED the characters. I loved how they all had completely different personalities, yet they flowed so smoothly within each other. They just worked and that made the story so much better. I also really really really really liked that this book was totally realistic, these types of things are very easily real. I haven't read lots of possibly realistic books lately, so this was beautiful. I really enjoyed this book. It was a great way to start in the Rainbow Rowell book community. This was just an overall FANTASTIC book. I definitely recommend it to everyone.

*****SPOILERS*****

OKAY. So the biggest plot twist had to be Nick. I was definitely not expecting that. It really made me hate him altogether. AND I LOVED THE END WHEN HE COULDN'T PUBLISH WITHOUT HER AND SHE WASN'T GOING TO TAKE CREDIT. Gosh, it made that whole part of the book worth while for me. That was the biggest punch in the face. I loved how Wren, Reagan, and, Levi were all there to stand up for her and were equally as pissed.  Levi, oh Levi, holy cow. He was such a fantastic boyfriend. Like even after that small fight they had near the end he was so upset, but didn't really leave, like most guys would have done, he was just outside her room. Lord, he was perfect. He legitimately cared about her. We all have Levis' in our lives. So I love that. We all have Wrens' and Reagans' in our lives too. Which is really a fantastic element to this book. Laura. God. Effing Laura. What a jerk. What kind of person can leave her effing kids once, and then pracitcally do it again when one is about to die, or could? SHE COULDN'T EVEN GO IN AND SAY HI? JUST A FREAKING HI? That was probably the most heart ripping part of the book, when she walked in Wrens' life to leave. I think though, that it wasn't long enough. But that is me being selfish. I just would have really liked to have seen like how Cath and Levi got through the summer and hear about their thoughts on the LAST Simon Snow book.

Goodbye,

Carlie
